I am very interested in current affairs and I am always seeking out the latest information about politics, and I enjoy discussing these things with my family and friends in debates whenever I get the chance.  I usually enjoy these discussions very much, but after a while, I find that our discussions would get repetitive, so I wanted to look for different venues for discussions. The sad thing is that it is very hard to find a place for a good debate since most of the places are completely one sided, or else they have are filled with profanity and crude name calling.  It seems that in our current political climate, it is impossible for anyone to acknowledge that the other side might have a valid point and we instead decide that they must all be amazingly stupid or entirely evil. 

I wanted something better in terms of discussing current affairs, and thankfully, after months of suffering from the harsh, terrible world of the Internet, I discovered a website that offered something new.  This website allowed people to have a place to write out a short article stating their viewpoint on a particular topic and then they can post it on the website and wait for someone else to write a counter argument. It was an elegantly designed website that provided people the chance to debate online about their favorite issues and events before voting on which argument was better.  People could leave comments about the various articles, but this was an option only for those who had previously created an account and a username, a move that kept the awful Internet trolls from saying mean things under the guise of anonymity.  Because of this, the debate tends to be reasonable and instead of unending comparisons to Hitler, the people who vote are encouraged to read the various opinions before casting their votes. 

Since I first encountered the website, I have actually written several of my own articles and as a part of this process, I feel like my arguments are sound, but I also feel like I have increased my ability  to understand where other people are coming from and why they feel the way they do.  I love a good debate, and rather than exhaust my friends and family, I can now explore a wider world where the events of the day are explored and I think that maybe, as a result of these discussions, those of us who live in this country might be able to overcome the differences that at times seem likely to tear us apart.
